| #10 - Task Taken:
Name: The Community Difficulty: Medium Reputation: 30 Description: You've stumbled upon the beginnings of a community. It is comprised of several buildings, a small city of tents and trailers, a field for growing crops and a watering hole. It is surrounded by walls lined with cars that zombies cannot pass. The female lead of the community, a former cop, needs runners to search the neighborhoods nearby for any kinds of supplies. The neighborhoods are infested with zombies, so the job calls for someone armed, and who has experience dealing with zombies. A dufflebag will be supplied to you to collect supplies.
Ghost walked up the freeway exit ramp. To his right, down a couple blocks, he saw a large wall. It wasn't the kind of wall that would have been there back before all of this, seeing as it was made of garage doors and billboards. There was a space in the middle for people to walk through, blocked by a city bus. Ghost looked carefully and could see a couple of people on top of the wall, walking back and fourth. It looked like Ghost had come upon his first survival community. Leaning on a stop light pole, Ghost took a long drink of his water bottle, wondering if whether or not he wanted to get involved with this community. He didn't figure his brother to be part of this, nor would he have come over to the west side. Anything was possible though; maybe someone here had seen him or knew him. Maybe this was also an opportunity to get his hands on more gear, possibly another firearm, or ammunition for the one he had already. It was with some hesitation that Ghost finally stood up straight off the stop light pole and started walking. As he moved along, he could see the ground stained red in many places. The street closer to the community had been cleaned, as were some of the buildings. The wall of the community was lined with abandoned cars. The ground was also stained red and burgundy here too, meaning much blood had been shed. Something bad had to have happened here. Ghost heard the sound of bullets being chambered. Through the goggles he had on he looked up to see 2 men standing on the wall near the entrance to the community both holding automatic weapons, pointed at him. "That's far enough!" one of them yelled. "Stay where you are!" Next, ghost could hear doors opening behind him, on either side of the street. 2 men came out of one building, a man and a woman came out of another. They all looked disheveled and dirty, dressed like survivors. "Well, what do we have here," said one of the approaching guys. "You some sorta apocalyptic super hero or something?" "Nice goggles," said another. Others were chuckling and laughing some. "Nice coat too. I think i'll be having that," the first man said. "Along with whatever's inside of that bag---" He reached towards Ghost, to have his fingers and hand grabbed a certain way, and twisted. He was made to turn around, with several pops and cracks; the sounds of some of his fingers and wrist being broken. He yelled, then had his left knee kicked, forcing him to kneel. He turned to look at Ghost with a frown, but instead turned into a right straight and sent him crashing to the pavement unconscious. Another one of the men took a swing at Ghost from behind. Ghost ducked without even looking at him, switching hands from left to right with his metal bat. While he was low he turned and swept this man from his feet with his bat while rising, causing him to turn upside down while airborne and crash roughly onto his face and neck. The third man drew a knife while the female began to display some sort of martial art. The man swung several times at Ghost with the knife; he blocked the swings with his bat while at the same time avoiding acrobatic kicks from the woman. The 2 men on the wall only seemed entertained by the display. While this went on, the engine of the bus used to block the entrance of the community started up. Ghost knocked the knife out of the man's hand and gutted him with his bat. He made an OOOGH sound as he bent over into Ghost's left knee, sending him back upright. Ghost used the bat to sweep this man from his feet next, sending him backwards onto the back of his head and neck. Switching hands with his bat again while ducking under a kick from the woman, he blocked another kick and slapped her across the face. Pissed now, she attempted to kick him in the crotch, but this was blocked, and countered with a backhand. Another hard slap that echoed around them sent her to the ground. The bus had been moved by then, and Ghost turned to face a large man in the remnants of a police uniform cocking a shotgun and aiming it at him. Ghost showed no reaction. A couple of others came out after him, pointing pistols in his direction. "Easy, Brock," came another female voice from behind the big man. Another woman came out last, putting her hands on the pistols and lowering them. As she walked over next to the big man with the shotgun - Brock, as she called him - Ghost was able to see that she was quite the looker. She had long blonde hair, green eyes, and was also dressed in the remains of a police uniform. She was armed, but her guns were in their holsters. The shotgun Brock held was lowered next. While she was very easy to look at, Ghost didn't look like he cared at all. The two with the pistols went to help up the 3 men and the one woman; all giving Ghost devious stares. The two up top on the wall looked amused, and weren't aiming weapons at Ghost. Brock looked like he wanted to shoot Ghost, and the female, who had to be the leader, looked towards Ghost as if he were a delicious meal to eat. "You're pretty talented, stranger," the female said, her hands on her hips. "I think we could use someone like you." "...Sorry I don't do groups," Ghost replied. "I don't think i'd be very welcome here furthermore, after what just happened. I'm just passing by..." 4,015 + 979 = 4,994 words | |

"You'd seriously choose to stay out there in the wasteland that the world has become rather than join up with people trying to survive just like you?" asked the woman.
"Yeah," Ghost answered. "Your gorilla here gonna shoot me in the back when I go to leave?" Brock frowned even more, obviously not liking the fact that he was called gorilla.
"No... this new world has turned people into savages, but we're not like that. But before you leave, give me a chance to change your mind..." The woman moved somewhat closer to Ghost, turning the seduction and charm up to full. "I'm Regina... I run this place. A lot of us were police officers before this all began..." Giving Ghost the eye she put hands on both of his shoulders. "Who might you be?... I bet you have an interesting story to tell..."
Ghost took her hands off of his shoulders and stepped back. "My name's not important and i'm nobody," he responded.
Regina only looked amused. "Ohhh, tough and mysterious," she said, returning her hands to her shapely hips. "...I see that I probably won't be able to convince you to stay here long term... But we're still in the beginning phases, and truth be told, we need some help. Would you come inside so I can explain?"
Ghost couldn't help but feel like he was being set up. Glancing to his left, he debated if he should just leave or not. "Oh come on, we don't bite... well, we won't try to anymore, you have my word. If anyone tries to assault you i'll have them put in a cell. That goes for you too, Brock." Brock looked somewhat frustrated. Ghost sighed and figured it wouldn't hurt to look around this place at least. He finally turned and followed them inside of their community.
There was a police station inside of the walls. That had to be their HQ. There were a couple of other buildings that families were living in, and a field of tents and trailers. There was another field that looked like it had recently been plowed to grow food. The bus started behind them to move in front of the entrance again. Shifts were changing for wall watch, and the two who were once up there came down, both with grins on their faces. "Nice moves back there, you're a regular action hero," one of them said to Ghost.
"Forgive them, they don't see much action up there on the wall," added Regina. She stopped near the front doors to the Police HQ. Many folk were coming and going, all getting their own glances at Ghost. He took off his goggles and put them on his forehead. "So here's the thing. We have supplies here, and we're starting a farming project, but what we have won't last too long with the families and the kids we have. We've started a running crew, but it hasn't gone too well. The majority of them don't know how to deal with those things. You seem like you know what you're doing. Would you take some of my guys out with you into the neighborhoods nearby?... We have a barter system, and doing runs earns you points... The points can be used to buy weapons... There was a moderate supply left behind when the station was abandoned. interested?..."
Ghost couldn't say not to new weapons. He had the feeling that he was soon going to need more than just the 1911. It didn't take him too long to come to a decision. "...Why not," he said. "As long as I don't have to run with any of those jokers from earlier."
"How about us? We'll go!" said one of the wall guys from earlier. He and his partner both looked excited. Ghost nodded his head.
"You ready to set out now?" Both the guys nodded their heads, both having backpacks. They both had numerous guns on them. Ghost looked at Regina and gave another nod. Regina went inside of the police station for a moment and came back with 3 black dufflebags, handing one to each of them.
"Take care of yourselves," Regina said, giving Ghost the eye again. "Good luck..." Ghost put his goggles on. One of the wall guys lead him around to another exit on the side of the police station and they set out towards the nearby neighborhood of houses...

The trip started out uneventful. The two wall guards, George and Vincent, mostly asked Ghost a bunch of questions that he gave vague answers to, like he usually did. he mostly wanted to tell the two to shut up, as they were loud and laughed often, telling Ghost that the majority of the people he'd beat up earlier were the community's "problem children." they were always starting shit with new people, but this was the first time that they'd gotten their asses kicked, all at the same time, by one man at that. So naturally George and Vincent had become fans.
In the nearby neighborhood that was for the most part untouched, there were cars half packed, dead bodies, and several ransacked houses. Ghost, George and Vincent were able to scavenge several houses and fill up the dufflebags with all of the essentials, like food stuff, medicine, clothes, blankets, and other things like toilet paper and women's hygiene products. George and Vincent didn't want to grab that kind of stuff, but Ghost told them they'd get points with the ladies if they did.
They were leaving out of a house when they encountered several zombies coming towards them. George and Vincent both paniced and went for their automatic rifles but Ghost stopped them both. "No!" he said quietly, pushing the barrels down, backing into the house again.
"But they're gonna get us! They're gonna--!!" George started to blurt, before Ghost put a hand over his mouth.
"Shut the fuck up!" Ghost pushed them both back into the living room and dropped his dufflebag on the couch again. A zombie, attracted by the noise, shuffled it's way quickly into the house, where George and Vincent went to work beating it's ass. Ghost put a hand to his face and shook his head. Drawing his combat knife from his left boot, he stabbed the thing in the head, causing it to fall motionless. "...Jesus, do you guys know anything?"
They both looked surprised. "N-No... afraid not..." Vincent said.
"First off, these things are attracted by noise. Don't use guns. One shot will bring every one of these freaks in the whole area right here. And keep your fucking voices down. The last thing you wanna do is panic. Second, the brain. It's the only way they go down and stay down. Anything else is just wasting your time and energy. The brain." Another zombie came in. Ghost struck it's knees with his bat, causing it to kneel, allowing him to stab it in the head. it fell motionless. George and Vincent went from looking terrified to fascinated.
"Ahh, alright... this makes things a lot simpler! We'll be sure to remember this!" Said Vincent.
"Grab my bag," Ghost said, shaking fluids off his knife. "I'll cover you two and be right behind you."
George grabbed Ghost's dufflebag. Ghost went out first to distract the remaining zombies, batting and stabbing them while they made a break back towards the community. With them in the clear, Ghost stabbed one more and vacated the area, pulling a dumpster in their path so that the zombies couldn't follow.
Regina looked surprised when the 3 of them returned unscathed. She and several others began looking through the looted goods, sorting them and handing some out. "...Wow, you even grabbed Tampons," she said.
"...George and Vincent's idea, not mine," Ghost responded, which garnered the 2 some stares.
"And no one was hurt either, i'm surprised... Well Mr mysterious, I think you've earned yourself some points... Are you sure about not sticking around? I could make it worth your while..." This was said with that eye of hers.
"For now," said Ghost. "I'm not making any promises though..."
